Garnett Dickinson cares about the world we live in and has always taken a strong stance on minimising the impact of its
operations on the environment. The company was awarded the ISO 14001 standard in 2002 and is proud to be one of the first web
printer in the UK to achieve this standard. We applied for Forestry Stewardship Council certification and received the award
in September 2005. In 2008, we were accredited to PEFC.

FSC Certification
Garnett Dickinson Print prides itself on only using paper from sustainable sources, so decided to go that one step further
and gain Forestry Stewardship Council Chain of Custody certification. This runs along with our commitment to continual
improvement of the Company ISO 14001 Environmental Management System. FSC Chain of Custody certification at Garnett
Dickinson Print iwas completed in September 2005. Now Garnett Dickinson Print has accreditation to the scheme, customers are
able to enhance their product by including the internationally recognised FSC logo, as long as the paper used for printing
is from a FSC credited source.
The Forestry Stewardship Council is an international organisation
promoting responsible forest management. FSC encourages chain of custody producers to manage their production processes to
allow consumers to buy products that are sourced directly from a responsible managed forest. Chain of custody is the process
by which the source of a forest product is verified. In order for products originating from certified sources to be eligible
to carry the FSC Trademark, the certified material has to be traced from the forest through all the steps of the production
process until it reaches the end user. Only when this process has been independently verified is the product eligible to
carry the FSC logo.

Reducing Waste
Waste reduction is a key issue for all print businesses. Garnett Dickinson is extremely pro-active in terms of waste
management to both reduce cost and minimise impact on the environment.
Our current waste agreements on larger contracts take advantage of various investments over the last two to three years,
particularly the Tobias system (similar to CIP3), which have contributed to a reduction in make-ready and running waste. In
addition to this, our new press offers the following benefits:
| • |
Reduced start-up waste on A4 products |
| • |
Shorter cut-off 1240mm. This is a saving of 20mm per cut-off on the new press |
| • |
Reduced handling waste due to new robotics in the bindery |
| • |
Less make-readies (bigger sections) |

Help for Customers
EC directives require publishers to monitor their own waste (pallets, strapping, shrinkwrap, polywrap, etc), and provide
figures on an annual basis. This is an onerous task for most publishers.
We have a great deal of expertise in managing our environmental performance and knowledge of the law regarding this subject.
We provide help to our customers in performing this task. For instance, we have provided a resource each year to Mirror
Group plc (Trinity Publications) to ensure that their figures were correct and submitted on time.
We can also help providing information on your jobs's carbon footprint. |
